“Exposed! The groups you really shouldn’t join on
Facebook!”
by Martin Allsop
They try to seduce you. They offer you something you
secretly crave.
They are mushrooming. They are popping up everywhere.
They can distract you when you most need to focus on
your true purpose. Yet all they offer is fools gold.
And by the time you finish reading this article
you’ll begin to realise that they’re stopping you doing
what you need to do – make the most of your most
precious resource - time.
What am I talking about?
All those Facebook groups (I’m sure they have their
counterparts in other social media) that invite you to
“Join and build your friends list”
Growing your Friends list
Now there’s nothing wrong with growing your Friends
list. I should know – I’ve just seen my Facebook Friends
group reach the 5,000 limit inside two months.
But your network building needs to have FOCUS. You
don’t just want anybody.
Think of it offline. Stand in a busy shopping street
(on Oxford Street or outside Bloomingdales) and ask
passers by: “Be my friend!”
What would happen (assuming you didn’t get
arrested!)?
Most would ignore you. If you were persistent enough,
you’d get a few friends. Now ask yourself, what would be
the quality of that list? A lot of random people; no common theme; a few having a laugh
and most you wouldn’t really want anyway. Get my point?
It isn’t size that counts!
When it comes to building a list of Friends on
Facebook it isn’t size that counts. You want quantity –
yes – but you want quality.
Give me a straight choice – a targeted, focused list
of 1,000 prospects and a list of 5,000, even 10,000,
random people and I’ll take the focused list every time.
So should you.
And that’s what you should be trying to build
What you should do.
So avoid these “Join and build your friends list”
groups – that is unless the people you are trying to
target are the desperate and friendless (OK, OK – in
fairness most people in there are most likely just
over-enthusiastic and unfocused)
Join groups – special interest groups - that relate
to what you are trying to achieve. This is where you
will find the people you are looking for, whether it is
friends, potential customers or people with shared
interests and concerns.
And stay off the (virtual) streets!
